foto//friday . the color before the spring

In my last post I talked about how I was ready for Spring to show up here in the Midwest…and today it did. Well, in regards to the weather. But all around buds are starting to poke out of the branches, and green tips are sneaking out of the soil to see if it is time to make their appearance. It’s fun. But before all of that beautiful color starts to appear, there is the color before the Spring! I was in awe yesterday while I was capturing these images…

foto//friday . Japan Relief Poster

We have all been devastated by the news, images, and videos that we have seen coming out of Japan today. If you are like me, I am always trying to think about what I can do in these situations, using what gifts I have to help in some way (even if it is a seemingly small manner). So today I created an 11×17 poster.

There have been a number of relief poster projects that have surfaced after major disasters (Hurricane Katrina, the Haiti Earthquake…), but I don’t know of anything for Japan yet. Here is what I am going to do. I will offer this poster for purchase, with all of the proceeds going to TEAM (the organization I work for) who has over 100 workers in Japan.

Suggested donation: $15

Soup Night

Every Tuesday, during the months of January and February, we have a neighborhood soup night. This past Tuesday we hosted it at the Johnson house! Soup night has become a highlight of our week during these cold and gray days, just getting together and chatting with the neighbors, eating some good soup, and enjoying each other’s company.

Cheyenne made an amazing chicken and sausage gumbo, and our humble home was packed with neighborhood guests. I think we had about 27 here. Our family is sad that there are only two more soup night’s in this “season”…but that doesn’t mean I am ready for another winter.

I love these images. Can’t wait to have a photographers soup night soon! :)

I LOVE this idea, Robert! How wonderful to have neighbors to fellowship with. Nothing says cozy like a great neighborhood and yummy soup!!!

How does it work? Word of mouth? Do you send out invites to everyone on your street? This is a neat idea!

rojo - February 11, 2011 - 8:43 am

@kamala – the “founder” of soup night sends out an invitation to the regulars and the hosts. then each host can invite whomever they wish to invite. but it isn’t at all exclusive…if one of our guests would like to continue coming to soup night, they are more than welcome! i would say start with those around you…and watch it grow from there!
